The story

Real Madrid stars Kylian Mbappe, Benicius Jr., and Ibrahima Konate have generated controversy after partially obscuring a message on their pre-match warm-up t-shirts. The apparel was meant to display solidarity with the Spanish exclave of Ceuta following a recent deadly border surge.

Prior to their fixture, players from both Real Madrid and Elche wore shirts printed with "Todos Somos Caballas," meaning "We Are All Mackerels"—a local term for people from Ceuta. The alteration of the shirts by the three players sparked mixed reactions, with observers debating whether the gesture demonstrated solidarity with struggling migrants or represented a failure to support the exclave's citizens.

Ceuta made international headlines last month when more than 70,000 people crossed a breakwater barrier from Morocco into Spain. According to the Spanish government, the tragedy resulted in an estimated 142 deaths as individuals drowned or were trampled.

Addressing the controversy, a Real Madrid official told Reuters that the club respects the differing opinions of its players and allowed them to decide whether to wear the shirt.
