The story

At least seven people have died and around 237 have been rescued after a ferry carrying nearly 270 people capsized off the coast of Cyprus. Rescue operations remain underway in the Mediterranean Sea to locate the remaining individuals.

The vessel, carrying an estimated 259 passengers and eight crew members, was traveling from Girne, Cyprus, toward Tashuju in southern Turkey. According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, the boat began taking on water before overturning, leaving passengers in life jackets standing on the side of the capsized hull as they awaited assistance.

The prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus stated that the ferry capsized due to difficult weather conditions.

A live stream from Girne showed survivors being transported to the port by helicopter and rescue boats, where several ambulances were lined up along the harbor amid sounding sirens. Responding to the disaster, the speaker of the Turkish parliament called it an "exceedingly tragic incident."
